True Way Presbyterian Church – English Congregation is a community that knows the love of God, which He demonstrated through the gracious giving of His Son Jesus Christ, who is central to our identity and mission.
The two “GCs” given by Jesus – the Great Commandment and the Great Commission – serve as the basis of our motto Love God, make disciples.
As a member of the Presbyterian Church in Singapore and in accordance with the Apostles’ and Nicene creeds, we believe:
God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, three persons but of the same essence, therefore one God who created all things and who is sovereign, powerful, and good.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God, fully God and fully man. As perfect man, He died once and for all on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, in our place. On the third day He rose from the dead, demonstrating and declaring His victory over Satan, sin, and death. All who put their faith in Jesus no longer face condemnation but enjoy an eternal relationship with God.
The Holy Spirit has been sent by the Father and the Son to dwell within every believer as a seal of God’s ownership and guarantee of His love. The Holy Spirit will guide us into all truth. As our Comforter, He is an ever-present help in trouble.
The scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the infallible Word of God given by inspiration of the Holy Spirit to reveal God and His will to us. They serve as the supreme standard of our faith and conduct.
The holy Church, both catholic (universal) and local, has been instituted by Jesus, who is head of the Church. All believers are members of His body and are bonded in Christ regardless of their differences. Each local church gathers regularly and frequently to worship God and build up her members to draw many others into the fellowship of Christ.
The sacraments of baptism and the Lord’s Supper (Holy Communion) are means of grace, made effective by the Holy Spirit and instituted by Christ. By baptism we are grafted into the body of Christ and are covered by His righteousness. In the Lord’s Supper we are united with Christ and one another, and are spiritually fed by His body and blood.
Jesus will return in glory to judge the living and the dead. The day of His return will be welcomed by those who depend on His righteousness, but will be a day of dread for all who do not believe and who thus face the judgment and wrath of God.
In all that we do, we are to strive to bring delight to God’s heart and glory to His holy name.
Our roots go back to the Chinese Christian True-Way Church (now True Way Presbyterian Church), founded by Rev Tan Leng Tian in 1939 as a congregation of mostly Hokkien-speaking migrant workers.
Their children became part of an English youth fellowship started in 1970 by then senior minister Rev Dr Stephen Tan. This youth fellowship eventually grew into an English service under the care of the Hokkien mother church.
In 1992, the English service was registered as a full member congregation of the English Presbytery as True Way Presbyterian Church – English Congregation (TWPC-EC). A Thai fellowship was established in 1998 and has since grown into a Thai service.
The church’s premises were developed in several phases. The first sanctuary (since demolished) was completed in 1959 with a four-storey block later added. The Sanctuary 2 extension was dedicated in 1997.
Rev Graham Ng served as senior minister from 1992 to 2000, Rev Tan Cheng Huat from 2000 to 2013, and Rev Lee Kien Seng from 2013 to the present.
