The Power Of A Testimony

“Do you have anything to testify?” someone asked. Another answered, “What do you want me to testify?” This conversation is meant to spark off our imagination. Testify! Testify! Testify that he is innocent or that is guilty? What and how to testify? You need to have your information and facts right before you are able to testify. You need to know your stuff.

In the Bible, we can learn of many incidences of people testifying. Jesus Himself testifies; His disciples testify; the apostle Paul also testifies. Likewise, we also should testify. Being a child of God, redeemed by the blood of Jesus and by the grace of God, reconciled to God the Father through His beloved Son Jesus, we must have many wonderful things to testify about, especially in regard to our faith and our salvation, that is, how you and I turn our hearts to Jesus.

I recall two familiar Bible verses:

1 John 5:11-12, “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”  This is the testimony of God concerning eternal life and it has everything to do with His beloved Son Jesus. If you receive the Son, you would receive eternal life too. Eternal life is life with God and His Son, Jesus, forever.

John 17:3, “And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” Eternal life is “knowing God and His Son, Jesus.” God Himself has testified about His Son. Have you testified about His Son too?

I recall two more Bible verses:

Acts 20:21, 24, “Testifying both to Jews and to Greeks of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ … But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”

The apostle Paul testified of the need of repentance towards God and the need to place our faith in the Lord Jesus. He readily testified of the grace of God in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Paul testified readily and eagerly about our Lord Jesus. Are we also readily and eagerly testifying about Jesus our Lord?

Surely, each of us has testimonies to share, whether it is your testimony of salvation, of God’s wonderful work in your life and in the lives of your family members, of God’s protection and deliverance from depression, distress, and disease, or of God’s gracious provision for your needs.

Each testimony is a powerful testimony. It encourages the heart, edifies the soul, enlightens the mind and empowers the weak. Do not keep it to yourself but share it with others whenever the opportunity is given to you.  You may not know how your testimony can encourage someone. It can even enable someone to be drawn a step closer to the gospel. The true seekers shall find true refuge for their souls.

So, my friends, be ready with your testimony. Testify of the grace and the love of God; testify of the faithfulness and the goodness of God and of God’s redemptive plan for all mankind. Do not underestimate your testimony, especially your salvation testimony. It is always good to have your salvation testimony written down so that when opportunity arises, you may share it with others.

What should be included in a salvation testimony? In a salvation testimony, you should describe what your life was like before you were converted, when and how you were converted, and what your life has been like since your conversion. It should not contain too many details, as you want to be able to share it with others within three minutes.

What platforms can you share your testimony on? You can share your testimony during the Time of Sharing on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month, at the church Prayer Meeting on the 1st Wednesday of the month, at your Discipleship Group meeting, or perhaps even during Street Evangelism.

In conclusion, I would like to encourage us to start writing down our salvation testimony, if you have not already done so, so that we can always be ready to share with our colleagues, friends, family members, or anyone who asks how we came to faith in Jesus.

With God’s help and inspiration, we can fulfil our calling to “testify to others of repentance toward God and of faith in our Lord Jesus.” May our good and gracious God guide and help us as we testify for Him and for His glory! Amen.
