Book Review : Faithful to the End by Robert M Solomon

After hearing Dr Robert M Solomon preach on many occasions including the Discipleship Weekend with Dr Robert Solomon in August, I decided that I should read his books.  So this is the first Solomon book that I read.  And as this is the Resource Library’s relatively new purchase, I thought I would do a book review.

Faithful to the End is Dr Solomon’s exposition of 2 Timothy.  As we know, 2 Timothy is the Apostle Paul’s last epistle, written to none other than his favourite protégé, his spiritual son, Timothy.  I am sure Paul had many things to tell Timothy.  But these were his last words, before his martyrdom.  He would want to impress upon his son things that were of utmost importance.  So I believe we can learn much from these last words of a great apostle to his favourite disciple.

Paul started his discourse by expounding on what being united with Christ means, as this must be the very basis of being a Christian.  In this unity with Christ, Paul declared that he knew his God as opposed to knowing about his God, emphasising that the Christian experience is essentially a relationship with God.

Paul then moved on to talk about being useful to Christ and to be different from the world.  The last part, Part 4, is rather moving. Paul wrote about his preparation for the end, when he even expressed frankly his physical personal needs.

I found Dr Solomon’s book, as with his sermons, easy to follow and understand.  Yet while making the content simple, he is able to flesh out practical and important spiritual lessons.  This book is certainly worth a read.
