Trusting God

When you are learning to play the guitar, you have to trust your guitar teacher to teach you the right way to play it. You have to follow according to his instructions or else you will not know how to play it. I recalled an incident where I needed to trust someone who gave me direction. One day, while I was going to a wake service, on my way there, I could not find the place. In desperation, I called someone to give me the direction. He told me to go straight and I would be able to see the block number which I was looking for. I decided to walk straight according to his direction but I still could not see the block number. Then I hesitated, wondering whether I was on the right track. Within me, I still stubbornly wanted to follow my own sense of direction. Then I heard a still small voice telling me that I should just follow the instruction of the one who gave me the direction. So, I decided to go straight but with much patience and obedience, I finally reached the place of the wake. It was a long walk to that place and I was very tired. This is a precious lesson which I have learnt about trusting.

Similarly, in our Christian life, there are many incidents which we just have to learn to trust God. It is a learning-and-growing process. In many situations, we do not know the way. So, we must trust the One who knows the way, and we must listen to His direction. I recalled in Proverbs 3:5-6 which says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Sometimes, what is obvious may not be that obvious! Often time, our rationalisation fails us. When we rationalise too much, we can turn a wrong way to a right way. God will never lead us contrary to His words in the Bible. We need to trust God completely and wholeheartedly. Finding a life partner requires trusting God to provide for one. I recalled how God provided me with a life partner who served in the same ministry with me. We both served in the Prayer Ministry back then. Looking for a job also requires trusting God to lead you into one. I recalled how I specifically mentioned the details to God for a job which I was looking for and which He would then provide. For that job, I asked that there would be a viable Christian fellowship in that workplace and God answered that prayer specifically. Interestingly, the one who interviewed me was a Christian and he turned out to be my boss in that aviation company. I ended up working in that company for twelve years. I also trusted God to enable me to share the gospel with my working colleagues and eventually, by His goodness and His grace, led some to Christ. Interestingly, God provided me with opportunities to do follow-up with them. These were some incidents in the past which I learnt to trust God.

There is nothing too hard which God cannot do. With God, all things are possible. There are always new things to learn from the Lord in regards to trusting Him. Trusting God to provide for my daily necessities is just one of them. I recalled in Philippians 4:19 which says, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” I have because He provides. Trusting God to provide me with His wisdom to lead the church Prayer Ministry is a consistent and vital one. One of my favourite quotations is: “Trust in the great faithfulness of God!” by Hudson Taylor. I am able to trust God because He is trustworthy, faithful and good. He has never failed me. He will not forsake me. He will increase my faith in Him. He is my refuge and my strength. Whenever I have a need, I can commit it to God in prayer, trusting Him to answer it in His own unique and special way. When I commit a matter to the Lord in prayer, I will leave it to Him to resolve it for me. I will never take it back but trust Him who knows what is best for me. This reminds me of Psalm 37:5 which says, “Commit your way to the LORD; trust in him, and he will act.” I believe that God will act on my behalf because He loves me.

Trusting God has to do with knowing the faithfulness and goodness of God. We have a faithful and good God. His promises are rich and sure. Trusting God has to do with trusting in His promises. Let us remember that God wants to be involved in our individual life. He can make something beautiful in our precious life. Let us learn to commit our needs to Him in prayer, trusting Him to work out what is best for us. God will never give us what we do not need but He will bless us with a greater faith to know Him, to love Him and to obey Him. No matter how small or big your matters are, you can trust God to guide and help you through each one of them. Trusting God requires you to let go and let God take charge of your need or situation. God will strengthen your faith as you rely completely on Him. Trusting God is a wonderful journey. Let us enjoy walking in this journey. Praise the Lord! Amen.
